What was to become my primary interest in EDM turned out to be downtempo ... when I first realized what I was getting into, I wrote it up here as follows:

In 1999, I discovered two music websites that really attracted me -- made me feel like an adopted child who'd finally met the "real" family: Art of the Mix and thedownbeat.org.  A set entitled "The Moment" (featuring several tracks by downtempo nonpareil Tosca, a performance identity of Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber) was my bid to join the downbeat clan.  Since then, it seems I've gone completely loungecore ... the fastest-growing segment of MadameFLY's mixed CD output is the Downtime series.  Another manifestation of this love (or way of life) can be found on MixMeister Radio, where the BeatConscious show is currently streaming ... featuring all the varied sounds of downtempo.  A few of the playlists are posted here.

These days, it's the same, but moreso.  If you want to sample some other folks' thoughts about the genre, check out the "conversation" on the Crates page

Of the numerous genres listed on the Style Guide page, quite a few are ones I've come to consider sub-sets of Downtempo, which is a truly elastic genre ... for variations on the theme, check out these pages:

The set-lists on this page chronicle the beginnings ... as for the present time, just about everything currently listed on the mmRadio set-lists page is one form of downtempo or another, and thus a plain record of the flowering of this interest over the past five years.  Look there to catch up to the present.
