Home In the Crates BrainScan Style Guide Reviews of Independent Music FLYpaper: All the News My Nightlife

In the beginning, this site had a page I called The Freestyle 100 Interactive Playlist which was intended as a way to discover and share the musical interests of my visitors and see what happens when they interact with mine.   I thought of it as a way for me to find out about the music you know and spin, a way for you to know what I'm about -- a way for you to turn me on to that phat track I'd really love to hear.

Well, that was then ... this is now:  I've become as much a guide as a seeker, and the Interactive Playlist has become the basis for the BeatConscious Style Guide ... a look back at the musical genres I encountered as I explored the world of electronic dance music, searching for "my sound" ... and also, it is a tribute to a wonderful site I discovered, back in the early days, created by a DJ from Amsterdam who created his own style guide for music seekers ... his site is long gone, but I hope to fill that same space and provide a similar resource for those who have just arrived at the party ...

Let's start with a review of all those musical genres that first educated me, and links to pages with detailed discussions and sample playlists:

It won't surprise you to learn that mixed CD's were made for each of the categories.  To visit the individual genre pages, click on the Turntablist icon (those crazy hands) and you'll get my take on each genre as well as view a sample playlist to see what my set was like.  I make covers for all my mixed CDs, of course -- you can see some of the results on the Covers page.
